How Flat Feet Can Damage Your Knees

The individual with flat feet has excessively mobile, flattened-out (over-pronated) feet. The unstable foot tends to have the tibia (shin bone) rotated inward. Overtime, that rotation can affect the alignment of bones and ligaments of the knee and lead to improper function of knee mechanics. As a result, inward rotated lower leg, could damage the cartilage at the inner knee contributing to the development of the painful knee condition. In some cases, flat feet can even be considered as one of the causes of an injury to Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL).

Flat feet can cause knee pain

In 2011, the studies conducted at Boston University School of Medicine, found that those with the flattest feet were 31 percent more likely than other study participants to say they had knee pain on most days. And they were 43 percent more likely to show damage to the cartilage at the inside of the knee.
